Augusto Capellano took over from his father Teobaldo, a revered legend in Barolo and further afield, after he passed in 2009. Big shoes to fill for a young, fifth-generation winemaker whose family estate in Piedmont was officially founded in 1870, but has been producing Barolo as far back as 1861. Equally big shoes when your father was quoted as saying "Making Barolo is hedonism, it is art. Wine is hedonism. But wine, too, needs identity: I need to be able to say 'This is Barolo.' "
I am always amazed how Gabutti vineyard and "Cappellano" always respond to challenging vintages. 2017 was warm but once again these wines are work of magic. Great tension, fine tannin and elegance.
