A pack full of Antipodean orange faves?! Oh yes please.
2018 The Other Right Sunshine On My Skin Viognier, Adelaide Hills SA
These two know what they're doing when it comes to skin-contact winemaking. Viognier is the perfect medium, and they put it expert use here. Unapologetic perfume of over-ripe peaches, apricots and orange blossom. Medium-plus in body, with a sloshy good-times mouthfeel, and bursts of white pepper, candied ginger and citrus peel. A full-throttle stunner.
2018 Frederick Stevenson Marsanne/Rousanne, Barossa Valley SA
The man’s real name is Steve Crawford, and he’s been making waves in the Barossa and Eden Valleys (and more recently the Adelaide Hills) for the better part of the last decade. He studied viticulture in South Australia, but it was time spent making oxidative riesling in Germany’s Rheinhessen and traveling through Europe that imparted a more instinctual quality that informs his thoughtful and dynamic winemaking approach.
The guy knows how to make an orange wine, too – this luscious 70% marsanne 30% roussanne blend spends a week on skins and brings that creamy stone fruit, blossom and honeysuckle energy. More please!
2016 Pyramid Valley Vineyard Growers Collection 1 Month Orange Pinot Blanc/Pinot Gris/Gewurtztraminer, North Canterbury NZ
Pyramid Valley brings us a skin contact wine of pinot blanc, pinot gris and gewürztraminer, fermented in its skins for a month before being sent to old oak for a long sleep on lees. Strawberry, pear, tropical guava-rich scents - yet it's so vibrant and fresh. There's some phenolic grip and minerality too. The take-away here is; this is a bloody great wine.
2018 Travis Tausend Handful Semillon, Adelaide Hills SA
Two weeks on skins, plus plenty of time in barrel and bottle sees this semillon throwing out a treasure trove of complexity. It's a wild-eyed, umami-fuelled journey that somehow still finds structure and progression - definitely one for the eccentric oenophile of the group. Nashi pear, lemon rind wax and herbaceous notes dart around with fresh acid keeping it zinging. Whoa.
NV Brave New Wine Doppleganger Grape Juice, Denmark WA
Multi-variety, multi-vintage skin contact white. Riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, chardonnay, all fermented separately with different time on skins. Carefully blended together with wine reserved from last year’s blend (kind of Solera system). It's bright, and shiny, yet deep and cerebral, with warm spice notes of clove and star anise, with dried orange peel and pot pourri. (from BNW)
2018 Limus Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills SA
Hello! Calling all Radikon fans - this is an Aussie orange for you. A fully resolved orange wine, with firm and present tannins, spice, slip and steel. Utilising the low and slow philosophy in production, the intention here is to spend more time on everything - more time on skins, more time in barrel, more time in bottle before release - but we don't expect you to spend much time on it, this wine is moreish and will disappear before you can say "this ain't no Oyster Bay".
