Put out the Comte, start roasting the poulet! These wines call for an all-out party!
Domaine Ratte Cremant du Jura NV
In the town of Arbois, you will find the small Domaine run by husband and wife team Michel-Henri and Françoise Ratte. Here’s their Crémant du Jura. It’s a white of 100% chardonnay whites, harvested in 2015. A second fermentation in bottles gives it extra fine and elegant bubbles, and zero dosage makes it extra brut. Wow. This is truely breakfast wine. Pair it with croissants, or oysters, or not. Pop with friends, but don’t wait for a special occasion - get cracking !
Les Pieds sur Terre Cotes du Jura Savagnin ouille 2016
In 2014 Jean-Luc Morel handed over the reigns of Domaine Morel to his son Valentin. Valentin calls his wines ‘Les Pieds sur Terre’ (feet on the earth) - and this topped up savagnin is a beautiful example of his wholesome wine making beliefs. This is an electric wine that shows the soul of the new Jura. Drink this in the backyard with a platter of your favourite nibbles, not too cool.
Domaine de Montbourgeau l’Etoile Cuvee Speciale Chardonnay/Savagnin 2012
Winning chardonnay of unusual complexity. Barrel fermented by indigenous yeast, aged under flor on lees without being racked or fined. Abundant minerality abounds as a result, along with a waxy texture, and a resinous raw honey-like flavour profile. A bit of tarte Tatin going on too, and a bit of spice. Super clean, citrusy finish. Much wow. Bliss.
Les Dolomies Tero Ligile Chardonnay 2015
Unlike most Jura chardonnay this wine actually delves into the stone fruit characters that most associate with chardonnay, yet it still smashes you with the citrus, green apple and saltiness that you would expect. It truly is a joy of a wine for all chardonnay lovers. You could share this … or just keep it all for yourself.
Domaine Ratte Arbois Clos Marie 2017
The Clos Maire vintage is the winemaking of the red grapes Trousseau and Pinot Noir from the same vine in complantation. Semi-carbonic maceration gives this wine a lot of freshness and an exceptional fruitiness - the winemakers suggest pairing this with spicy food, so a good one to BYO to a cheap and cheerful dumpling date, perhaps.
Patrice Beguet Big Bunch Theory Fresh Impression
This is fun, interesting from fresh young blood in the jura - the new guard, perhaps. It’s a blend of 90% Gamay from the Loire (!! escandalo !!) and 10% Poulsard from Jura. It’s a floral and spicy little number, white pepper and rose water and the finish is long and mineral. It's a playful and charismatic wine to be enjoyed with a chill and an open mind / palette.
