One of the more rebellious and interesting wine producers of Rioja, Olivier Riviere is a bright spark in a landscape often dulled with mass-market wine making, overt oak handling and wines deadened with weight and alcohol. Here’s a bright, fresh-feeling and very lively red. Indeed, it’s one of P&V’s most anticipated wines each year, such is its vivacity, liveliness and generally gulpability. It’s highly if not wildly perfumed with pretty, berry fruitiness, shows crisp tannins, cranberry-like acidity and subsequent chalkiness. Such a different take on the regional staple, tempranillo, and redefines the ‘joven’ category along the way. Magic drinking.
