New look from Mallaluka including a return for the vowels in the grape varieties on the label. A maturing, one could say. What a delightful spot Mallaluka’s estate holds in the Yass Plains, recently visited by me on a rockin’ road trip from Sydney to Melbourne. And what lovely humans the Leyshon family are… This wine sees 24 hours skin contact and time in old oak with some oxidative handling in the mix. It’s a textural and interesting expression of chardonnay.
Nice chew to this wine, some bruised apple and dried apple scents, whiffs of pear, a dose of oatmeal and sea spray too. That’s a good combo for perfume. Tastes good too – stronger pear and lemon curd flavours, more of the oatmeal/grain and saline-mineral character with just a faint lick of white balsamic lift to close. Perfect freshness after the oxidative light-richness, one could say. Certainly working a funky bass-line. I’m down.- Mike Bennie The Wine Front
