Overnoy. Ganevat. Rinaldi. Cappellano. Aside the odd natural wine community insider’s lunch, these wines would be rarely seen side by side... let alone in a public tasting…
This is an extraordinary event and masterclass. Wines that rarely, if ever see light of day, are being opened, poured, discussed – better yet, the wines have been pulled from cellars with some judicious maturity to show the wines at their best. The trio of presenters decided it was time to do something that defies the usual usage of these wines, and share them more broadly.
The producers are some of the most significant names in global wine.
Overnoy (Huillon-Overnoy) is arguably THE cult wine for natural wine afficionados, but the pedigree transcends the category and the wines are symbolic of Jura’s mega-potential. Pierre Overnoy is the figurehead of a movement and a traditionalist who has captured our hearts and minds. Delicate ploussard, textural and complex white wines. Epic in every sense.
Ganevat is the work of Jean-Francois and Anne Ganevat, positioned at the southern end of Jura in the hamlet of Rotalier. Their plots from this village give life to their best wines, which are hauntingly beautiful, saline and minerally whites and reds of tension and detail.
Rinaldi is epic Barolo. A legendary producer not only for what’s in the bottle, which is extraordinary, but for advocacy in maintaining and broadcasting the importance of local history and tradition in Piedmont. These wines rarely make it beyond the first whisper of release.
Cappellano, another traditionalist and leading light of Barolo. These are wines of intensity, the most beautiful tannin and incredible longevity. The wines are sought after by all. They drink formidably and wonderfully.
Safe to say, this is a unique tasting. A one-off? Something very special. The list below is outrageous in its scope and scale – some wines simply unattainable (sorry!) but the experience will be memorable.
Ten guests only. Hosted by importers Andrew Guard (Overnoy, Ganevat), Giorgio de Maria (Rinaldi, Cappellano) and Mike Bennie (P&V Merchants). They know the people, the places and the wines very well. This is one heck of an amazing opportunity, and, damn it, it will be so good, so fun and so wonderful.
