Idiosyncratic. Pure. Wild. Charismatic. Delicious. The wines of Cantina Giardino are at the forefront of natural wine globally, and front of mind as one of the more prominent wine producers for the genre. The wines are lovingly-produced from old vines, heritage-local grape varieties from vineyards tending organically and have helped redefine the region of Campania almost single-handedly. They are unique and memorable wines, sought after across the world and commonly seen in landmark wine bars and restaurants.
The story echoes many of the great natural wine producers, though few have created the cult that surrounds the Gruttola family and their wines. From high in the hills of Irpinia in Campania, Cantina Giardino marry old-school farming, low yields, a creative marriage of grape varieties and wine styles, with an ultra-low intervention approach to winemaking. The wines ferment naturally, see zero additions and are raised without any measure of control. The varying cuvees are rested in terracotta amphorae or large old oak vessels hewn from local woods, and are bottled without filtering or fining, and, always with no sulphur.
The resulting wines explore a unique sense of terroir capturing not only the essence of these traditional varieties, and the sites they have been raised in, but arrive in glass with the overlay of this hands-off winemaking, resulting in brilliant, unique expressions. They are wonderful wines to explore.
