Clemens Busch is a legend. Not only one of the most significant biodynamic vignerons in Germany, and one of THE great winemakers of riesling, but one of the nicest humans on earth. Clemens exudes a quiet charm, smiles big and delivers some of the world’s great rieslings from his various plots in the lower Mosel wine growing areas – he’s shot to relative fame without showiness, or ego, relying instead on the siren song in the glass. These are extraordinary things to drink.
The small vineyards have been farmed by generations of the Busch family, but it wasn’t until 1984 when Busch decided to covert the property to biodynamic agriculture. He has continued to eschew chemicals in farming since then, and long questioned and removed the use of additives in wine while increasingly moving to lower inputs of sulphur alongside. It’s brilliant to hear of the significance of his farming work, in person.
So what do we have here? An extraordinary tasting with a brilliant, kind and delightful winemaker and grape grower. A very unique event that allows us to converse with Clemens about agriculture, culture, life and wine, drawing from his extraordinary body of work, and we get to spend a couple of hours tasting through around eight glasses of Clemens’ beautiful wine. Discover or reacquaint with Clemens’ wines and go away better for it. Pure, complex, vivacious and distinct wines that give clear messages about places from which they are grown and raised.
