Vigneron Aurélien Houillon comes from the amazing Houillon family of Jura with brother Emmanuel working alongside the legendary Pierre Overnoy and sister Adeline (with partner Renaud Bruyère) producing wine under their own incredible label. Indeed, Aurélien was raised a Jura winemaker and spent formative years with Pierre Overnoy before embarking on this individual project in southern Rhone. Of course, the small plots of vines are farmed organically and, of course, no additions are used in winemaking. Indeed, with Jura in mind, the winemaking overlay is particularly gentle, producing some of the finest, fresh and most delicate, pure-feeling Rhone wines we've seen. A revelation.
This is an exceptional grenache syrah, pretty and perfume, vibrant and bright. It's berry imbued but likewise we find undergrowth and brambles, dried herbs and earthy spice. Fine tannins shape the wine, but we can't help but thinking of a wine set between poulsard and trousseau, perhaps, perhaps. It's beautiful drinking, is the main message. And a rare treat.
