Vigneron Aurélien Houillon comes from the amazing Houillon family of Jura with brother Emmanuel working alongside the legendary Pierre Overnoy and sister Adeline (with partner Renaud Bruyère) producing wine under their own incredible label. Indeed, Aurélien was raised a Jura winemaker and spent formative years with Pierre Overnoy before embarking on this individual project in southern Rhone. Of course, the small plots of vines are farmed organically and, of course, no additions are used in winemaking. Indeed, with Jura in mind, the winemaking overlay is particularly gentle, producing some of the finest, fresh and most delicate, pure-feeling Rhone wines we've seen. A revelation.
Hello! Here is 90% syrah, 10% grenache. The vines are around 20 years old on sandy clay-limestone soils. Grapes are hand harvested. All fruit is juicy and de-stemmed and then it spends around three weeks on skins. Long. All sees stainless steel tanks for maturation. Zero sulphur. Blast off.
Of this trio of Houillon wines released, this is the gruntier, fuller flavoured and very earthy-savoury number. It's got brooding dark berry fruit jostling with undergrowth characters, smoky-graphite mineral notes and a spread of powdery tannins. A kind of rustic, ferrous vein runs through this wine. It's best drunk at an hour after opening, but it's memorable anyway you approach it. Seriously good.
