Barbera, but not as you know it from the Piemonte estate of pioneering vigneron Elio Altare.
This is a giving and elegant expression of the varietal, a polite barbera if you will. Sitting at 14% but with medium bodied approachability.
An inviting bouquet of violet, dried flowers, pencil shavings, trampled leaves. Black cherry on the palate keeping company with a little mellow mushroom earthiness, a smattering of spritely white pepper and sumac in there too. Really opens up in a delightful, effortless way.
Find me a large bowl of pasta with red sauce and let me have this bottle all to myself.
Elio's done it again.
