Grenache, carignan and merlot. The merlot and the grenache are both grown on sandy soil, and the carignan on limestone and gravel. Elodie is a young female winemaker who is influenced by Marcel Richaud (considered to be the godfather of natural wine in the Rhone Valley) who, incidentally, did his first vintage with Balme's grandfather.
Her intention is to make wines that are focused and elegant, concentrating on flavour. Although it's a solid 14% it's not a wildly heavy Rhone wine, with smashed violets and beautiful blue and purple fruits being the predominant vibe here.
Fun fact, merlot is not a Cote du Rhone approved variety so this wine has to be listed as 'vin de France'
