Charming, utterly charming - that's how we feel about Fanny Sabre's Monthelie Sous Les Roches 2018 - a great year for the parish and Sabre's pure, light take on red wines is utterly beguiling here. It's of course all pinot noir, yes, but a fantastic, fragrant example with complexity and length typical of Monthelie (not far from Meursault), but the wine seems to dance a little more, fresher, more lively, brighter, which is right up our alley. Yes, intense red fruit flavours meet forest floor and cool, amaro acidity, but it's the shape and structure of the wine, coupled to fine, fine tannins, that elevate this offering. It will continue to improve with age but its going to be very difficult to resist. It's great Burgundy in any language.
