2018 Julie Balagny VDF cayenne

Cayenne is made with grapes from Julie's younger vines in Fleurie. The vines are 35 and 40 years old. Dark fruit, and powerful, lighter in colour and overall essence. Roses in the background, but also lighter red berries underneath. Yummy milk chocolate dust notes on nose. Perfume is coming and is very good. Palate is crazy, so many layers. There is very nice sweet fruit, lots of depth, and a gentle sweet roses lift near the finish. Beautiful texture too. This is so good now, but in a few years this will blossom and the perfume will become intoxicating. There are so many layers of flavour. Nice sticky tannins and some good tension. But still that dreamy, creamy texture. Dark red roses and strawberries with some darker twists in the middle. Great full mid-palate, packed with stuffing. Gentle acidity. The lightest of the 18's. – Larkin Import


2018 Julie Balagny VDF docteur Buchaille

Julie has 0.7 hectares of old vines in Moulin-à-Vent, planted in 1913 - here the soils are granite and quartz. And the wine is named after her neighbour, who helps out in the vineyards. He's a bit of a gun apparently.
Boom! What aromas! Deep and sexy, so much power yet so pretty. Strong and confident. Blackberries and boysenberries mixed with cocoa and hints of cigar. This smells like a mix between 16 and 17 with a hint of 15. Dark red roses, some ozone, and super pungent yet lifted. Texture is dreamy as per usual, waves of creamy silkiness drift across the tongue. Layers unfold. Then a bit of sneaky back alley cigar and char hint their way in, but only just. The fruit and multifaceted layer system is impeccable. The sweet fruit lingers. So much depth for a wine that is relatively light in comparison to what it suggests. No one makes wines like Julie. Tannins are grainy, charcoal influence is noted, and it is rugged and pretty at the same time. Love it. – Larkin Imports

2018 Julie Balagny VDF en remont

This wine is made from her oldest vines in Fleurie, which are 60 and 100 years old.

Much darker in style. Lots of tamarind and chocolate in the beginning, as blackberries make an appearance later on. The taste and mid palate is thick, but the wine is not heavy. Everything is loose knit and dreamy. Love the gentle hint of volatile, just to lift it. Lots of spice, some charcoal, black fruits and tamarind. This is very, very tasty. Went incredibly well with Embla's beef and pine mushroom pie, what a combo. It is more of a colder weather wine. Nice tannin, quite charcoal-y. Acidity lingers, medium. Decent structure. It’s funny cause it feels like it’s not organized, but no one else makes wines that taste like this – in a very good way. I prefer this style as it is so unique and soulful, where as a lot of other wines are predictable and too regimented. Every time you take a sip you notice something different.
