Julien Pineau came from varied backgrounds before settling into the life and work of a vigneron having had an epiphany while working harvest at Lise and Bertrand Jousset's in Montlouis, Loire Valley. Having purchased the famed vineyard of Clos Roche Blanche (with the equally excellent Laurent Saillard), Pineau set about creating a suite of wines that reflected the exceptional terroir, with no additions, no manipulation, and zero sulphur. This wine is produced from the bright and crunchy local variety pinot d'aunis, from vines that are approximately 80-years-old, raised in fibreglass tanks, macerated (carbonic) for a mere two weeks to give the wine light colour and delicate flavour. It's a beautiful wine, tastes like sour and sweet cherry with an earthy, herbal edge. Superb drinking.
