As often with the wonderful wines of Phillippe Bornard, there is a meaningful play on words, here we’re asked to redistribute the letters (Jo) Liqueur to ‘Joli Queur’ which sounds like ‘joli coeur which translates to ‘happy heart’. Awww. Nice. It’s a wine produced in a macvin style which means fresh grape juice sees an additional of clear spirit to produce a kind of fortified wine that the Jura region has made since the Middle Ages, or so. This one comes from Bornard’s chardonnay vines and tastes rich, unctuous and complex, with nutty notes and sweet spice jostling with that richer, grapey juiciness. It’s a wonderful wine for cheese platters, post meals and generally just enioying a lot.
