Boris Portnoy runs the excellent Georgian-focused experience restaurant Gray and Gray Bread and Wine in inner city Melbourne. Ex-Moscow, Boris has returned to USSR roots, per se, with a property he purchased in Georgia after a decade-plus visiting there. To say he ‘gets it’ is to say the least, but it applies. This is a wine produced from his neighbours grapes while he waits for his vineyard to come online. It’s produced by Boris in his neighbour’s basement with macerated fruit going to stainless and pressed juice heading to amphora.
Deep orange colour. Scents of dried mixed citrus peel, ginger biscuits, almond, lemon myrtle, curry spices. Pretty and exotic hand-in-hand. Fine and bright. a fruitiness amongst the honey and more citrus. Really delicious, energetic, a glossiness to texture with a squeaky, tonic water twist to finish. More marzipan and almond with time. It’s vivid and so darn delicious. - www.winefront.com
