French wine isn't always about big Bordeaux, crisp Chablis and pretty Provence - winemakers across the country are playing fast and loose with wild techniques and wonderful grapes. White wine made in a cidre press? Yep. Skin contact from the Loire? You betcha. Fizzy pineau d'aunis? A game changer. They've successfully put gamay back in our glasses; proven time and time again that chenin blanc looks good in orange; plus shown that rose can be so much more than a pale pink brunch accompaniment.
The French are very good at making the rules, but they are equally good at breaking them. That signature joie de vivre and a twinkle in their eye translates straight into the glass. While you might have already heard Isabelle wax lyrical about the glories of all things French, especially Champagne and chardonnay - the obsession doesn't end there. Having fallen hard for wine during a year-long stint in France, for every afternoon she spent sipping Pouilly Fumé at Cafe de Flore, watching the world go by, there were evenings of cheeseburgers, pet nats and dancing on tables. This tasting is a deep dive into the joy of breaking the rules, and risking everything for taste.
From the new guard in Jura, up-and-coming boundary pushers in Beaujolais, to peculiar pineau and other difficult to pronounce grape varieties. Join P&V's Isabelle (ex Acme and L&Ps), a fully fledged Francophile and obsessive white wine drinker, for a joyful evening of talking and tasting through a genial line-up of fun, fresh, funky and ferocious French wines. With the likes of Phoenix and Lou Doillon playing softly in the background.
