Swan Valley Wines are one of our finds of 2018 - a pint-sized producer from the often-maligned wine region of Swan Valley, one of Australia's oldest wine growing areas but one with a reputation mostly for modest quality and fortified wines. These wines shine a light on the potential of the region, and how an overlay of minimal intervention winemaking, picking on freshness, and diversity of wine styles, can bring excitement to drinkers.
This chenin blanc sees extended time on its skins, producing a textural 'orange wine' of zesty yet chalky texture, citrusy intensity, wild nature and yet high drinkability. It's highly perfumed, almost chewy in the way it sits in the mouth, but finishes with a pool of tangy, refreshing acidity to keep things mouth-watering and delicious. It's an exciting, maybe even thrilling wine, showing huge personality and yet a sense of urgency in drinking. It's awesome.
