This wine is made 100% from the indigenous Begleri grape grown on terraced, light-soiled vineyards across the west side of the Greek island of Ikaria, at altitudes around 400 metres or more. The soil is unique — mainly sandy/argillic with granite/sand components, very low in calcium & phosphorus, and packed with micro-nutrients like iron, manganese and boron, which gives the wine a distinct mineral backbone.
In the glass you’ll pick up a slightly cloudy golden hue, thanks to its natural style. Fermentation and maturation in stainless steel. On the nose you’ll get stone fruits, quince and a bit of white mushroom or forest-floor texture, while the palate brings lively acidity, a hint of saltiness from the sea-air influence, and a sweetish finish of buttermilk caramel and citrus. Best chilled around 10-12°C and perfectly paired with grilled fish, seafood, lemon-roast lamb or mellow yellow cheeses — perfect for a relaxed dinner with mates.
2024 was a particularly difficult year with ill-timed significant hail damage to some the Afianes vineyard sites. Coupled with a warm dry spring it may have been a low yielding harvest, but the Litani this of 2024 has been produced an amazing purity and finesse. - Nice Eyes Wines, Importer
