VALTELLINA! ELEVATION! This is nebbiolo – or chiavennasca as it’s known up in the very north of Lombardy near the Swiss border. From steep, stony, terraced vineyards painstakingly farmed by hand, which rise up to 700m above sea level. Lots of red-berry fruit character and rose petal perfume, but – as always – packed with the signature alpine detail that makes these expressions so captivating. Granite, pine needles, mountain herbs, wild fennel. Lithe and delicate, with soft tannins that don’t overstay their welcome and refreshing, mouthwatering acidity. Another standout release from some of the region’s superstars.
