Kate Sturgess is an awesome force for good, at the apex of winemaking at Brokenwood (having done time at a series of blue chip wineries around Australia), wine show judge, Hunter Valley and NSW wine advocate, shiny human. “I had been talking about doing my own label for a looooong time, and it had been encouraged by Stu [Hordern]”, Kate offers, “and there was a catalyst that provided impetus to make it work – I had some access to fruit and some time and of course the space and this was bolstered by a motivating life moment and a thought to Do It Now”, and ipso Bani Vino has come about through some grit and nous in equal measure.
Kate reached out to vineyard owner Peter Wiggs for a portion of fruit from his Stanleigh Park Vineyard, “I always liked this vineyard, I think the chardonnay there holds acid and has a nice flinty profile generally”, Kate offers, “it’s a little later ripening too, which has so far been good for me”.
A toasty undertow in saline minerality and just-ripe stone fruits, hazy green apple juiciness, light lemon/lime freshness, some chalky grip and a subtle dusting of sweet spice. Just so. Even, balanced, fine boned and very refreshing. A cool, minerally feel generally with good texture and good length in tow into its long pithy finish. A leaner style, not quite racy with its juicy-fruity feel, but close, and in that, hits a lot of marks. - The Wine Front
