DEFY x Baba's Place Incense Burner

Together with DEFY, a Sydney-based company that specialises in designing and manufacturing impactful products made from plastic that is otherwise destined for landfill, we have created an incense burner, or object of desire for the home.

The pillar, or as academic Mirjana Lozanovska calls in her seminal work 'Migrant Housing...' "a bulbous baroque baluster of precast concrete" is a defining architectural feature of post-war eastern-european/mediterranean migrants. A contribution to Australia's domestic vernacular that began as literal and symbolic building blocks for a sense of place and subjectivity in the adopted land, quickly became lightning rods for pseudo-racial complaints of "Wog" mansions in opposition to the more stately sandstone or Victorian Cottage AKA "Heritage". 

For us at Baba's Place, those pillars are a reminder of the work that was put into building one's own home in foreign place. One's own space. They're also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done, in our business, in our communities and in our country.
