Frederic Cossard Genevrierers Qvevris 2021
A parcel of forty year vines in a lieu dit out of Gevrey-Chambertin. The wine sits on skins for only a few days, as whole bunches, beforre being pressed off to qvevri for maturation. The terracotta pots indeed lend a savoury, nutty, sweet-earthy inflection, but the mainstay here is concentration of attractive, dark cherry and cranberry fruit characters amongst shiitake mushroom, black pepper and Chinese five spice. Brooding as a pinot noir, it overdelivers in the complexity stakes and yet hands out drinkability in spades. What a damn, fine wine. Extraordinary.
