Lamoresca Vino Rosso 2022
Frappato 60 %, nero d’avola 35 % and grenache 5% from forty year old vines in Filippo’s home vineyard, planted over clay and sand. It is a wine that feels resolutely Mediterranean, with soft tannins and flavours of dark fruit, flowers and woody herbs.
Les Vignes de Paradis G de Marin Gamay 2020
The gamay for this cuvée is planted in granitic soils with glacial morass definitively making it the most mineral-driven of his reds. Gently pressed after a 10 day whole bunch maceration, the wine is then aged in terra cotta amphorae for 7 months.
Ostal Levant Goupil 2021
Goupil is a hybrid of chambourcin, villard blanc and villard noir. Hybrids are an interesting topic and can be confusing for customers and professionals alike. Simply, hybrids come into existence by grafting different species of grapes onto each other in hopes of creating more disease resistant varietals.
The 2021 Goupil is an excellent example of this. It carries deep inky color and weight with a balanced structure and protectively-handled dark plum and currant fruit notes. All in all a very palatable and delicious wine – a perfect expression of the potential hybrid varietals show.
Marie & Sylvie Courselle Temps de Lune Sans Soufre Ajoute 2020
Concrete (naturally) fermented cabernet sauvignon from two very progressive women winemakers in Bordeaux. These wines have been a wonderful discovery for us. Such unique and compelling expressions. No SO2 (sulphur) here (or any other additions).
Soft and supple, plummy red of light spice, some earthiness and a savoury finish. This is super pleasing, very gentle in its way, easy to drink and feels so utterly pure and wonderful. Such a charming, lighter red, but with enough going on to seduce beyond the drinking pleasure.
Cappellano Barolo Pie Rupestris 2018
Augusto Capellano took over from his father Teobaldo, a revered legend in Barolo and further afield, after he passed in 2009. Big shoes to fill for a young, fifth-generation winemaker whose family estate in Piedmont was officially founded in 1870, but has been producing Barolo as far back as 1861. Equally big shoes when your father was quoted as saying "Making Barolo is hedonism, it is art. Wine is hedonism. But wine, too, needs identity: I need to be able to say 'This is Barolo.' "
La Terrasse d'Elise Les Hauts de Carols 2019
Cinsault is a passion of Xavier's and this is his finest example, the name of the Cuvee is after the lieu-dit it comes from, a secluded parcel of old vines nestled amongst forest away from it all. This is complex and utterly compelling, brambly red fruit, fennel and thyme - superb tannins and focus and super purity on the finish. Top shelf drinking.
