Kalabelé 2022 is a dry white wine from Ikaria, Greece, made with equal parts 50% Begleri and 50% Assyrtiko grapes; all certified organic. Like all the wines of Karamalis it is a minimal intervention wine, fermented with wild indigenous yeasts, with no additives or filtering, and naturally clarified and stabilised. Aged for six months on the lees, it’s best served chilled at 8°C. Expect a full-bodied wine with balanced acidity and notes of ripe citrus, green apple, jasmine and dried chamomile, rounded out with a hint of honeycomb. It is very reminiscent of the wild thyme, sage and smells surrounding many of the island’s apiaries.
The name Kalabelé comes from the Greek “kalo ampeli”, meaning “good vineyard” — a nod to the Karimalis family’s ancestral field known for its perfect mix of elevation, slope and climate. The grapes are treated gently, with a 36-hour cold soak before natural fermentation, and bottled unfiltered under natural cork. The result is a beautifully expressive wine that captures the character of Ikaria’s wild, windswept terroir. - Nice Eyes Wine, Importer
