Sylvaner was, at the turn of the last century Germany's most widely-planted white grape. Whilst it was overtaken by riesling in the early 1900s, sylvaner is still grown in significant amounts in Germany (Franken and Rheinhessen), in Alsace, France, across the white winegrowing regions of Austria and then in Sudtirol and Trentino in Italy.
It's typically described as the perfect match for asparagus - think of a crisp dry white wine with gentle green herb and white floral notes, and a pleasing grapefruit pith palate flavour. It's medium bodied at best and quite refreshing. Come and visit this wine from sauvignon blanc, from pinot grigio, from Petit Chablis or from riesling. Our experience has been that whilst many have not heard of the variety, most re-order it. - Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown
